Substance-Impaired Driving Continues to be a Risk
November 12, 2021 | Category: DUI Accidents | ShareA study of some of our nation’s trauma centers in late 2020 showed 56 percent of drivers involved in serious injury and fatal crashes tested positive for at least one drug. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says, “You can’t drive safely if you’re impaired. That’s why it’s illegal everywhere in America to drive under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, opioids, methamphetamines, or any potentially impairing drug, prescribed or over-the-counter.”
Drugs react differently in a driver’s system.
- Alcohol and marijuana can cause slow coordination, judgment problems, and slower reaction times.
- Cocaine and methamphetamine have the potential of making people more aggressive and reckless drivers.
- If two or more drugs are combined in the system, the effects of any one of them can be amplified.
- There are prescription and over-the-counter medications that can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and other side effects. It is important to read all labels before taking medications for the safety information they provide.
Recovery facilities agree that driving while impaired continues to be a complex and persistent issue for traffic safety and public health. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study in 2018 showed 12 million people in the U.S., or 4.7 percent of the population age 16 and older, reported driving under the influence of marijuana during the previous 12 months; 2.3 million, or 0.9 percent, reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs, other than marijuana, during that same time period.
